Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Comcast sure knows how to throw together a 10 million pixel video display. The one seen here is available for ogling at the Comcast Center in Philadelphia, and covers over 2,100 square feet of wall space with four-millimeter LED lights. The images and video that play on this super screen do so with a resolution that’s five times that of HDTV. Comcast ended up paying Barco $22 million for the wall display and accompanying automated control room, which handles about 27,000 gigabytes of information. If you have 10 minutes to spare, the impressive presentation video of this thing in action is definitely worth a view.

The guys over at Crabfu Motionworks have been responsible for some weird and wonderful robotic creations over the years, and their latest is no exception. The Crabfu R/C Tortoise Bot crawls along the ground like a turtle, with a set of 4 sub-micro servos controlling its pokey little legs. The way it ambles about, I don’t think this tortoise will be beating any hares in a race anytime soon.
Optoma has just announced the first Pico projector that is powered by the DLP Pico chipset, with a device so small it is able to fit right into the palm of your hand with no problems whatsoever. Being smaller than the majority of smart phones out there, mobile professionals who eat, drink and sleep PowerPoint will definitely find this to be a boon in their everyday work. The Optoma Pico Projector will be available in limited distribution in Europe and Asia in late 2008, where a worldwide launch will begin next year. No idea on pricing though.
Sound gadgets such as iPods and the like are beautiful things, but when you want to listen to your music around the house, in the bathroom, the garden, or out by your luxurious pool, you don't want to go ruining them with water and dirt - or come to think of it drag round speakers festooned with wires and cables etc etc. This Wireless Floating Speaker allows you to leave your high-tech gadgetry (and indeed your stereo system) safe in the warm while you take the speakers wherever you like. You can even float them in the bath or the pool! A small transmitter hooks up to your sound system (be it big or small) and wirelessly transmits your tunes effortlessly up to 150ft away, to these incredibly cool speakers. Wherever you wander round the house or garden you can take your music with you. Hook 'em up to your iPod, your computer, your stereo, your TV, i.e. whatever has a standard 3.5mm audio output and is pounding out sound, and you've got music at your fingertips.
The CPR Pad could potentially save the lives of many, if and only if it moves beyond the concept stage. This design is meant to be applied to the patient’s chest during an emergency, where the monitor/aid will show how to push the chest correctly, giving out a click when you do it right. A flashing light will ensure that a proper rhythm is maintained, making anyone able to perform CPR without having to read through first aid manuals or doing it wrongly.
Umbrella’s aren’t just good for shielding you against rain and the sun, but an improvisation would result in the Light ‘N Go Auto Open Auto Close Folding Umbrella with Flashlight Handle, providing you with some much needed light at night. Turning the thing on and off is achieved by pressing a button on the handle, and LED lights are by no means dim, making them a suitable choice to light up your path when you’re talking a stroll through unfamiliar territory at night. It retails for $25 and is waterproof, ensuring you won’t get electrocuted whenever the heavens open.
Nooka’s Zub watches glow-in-the-dark, they were actually manufactured for Kanye West’s “Glow in the Dark” tour featuring Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, and N.E.R.D. No idea if these will ever make it out on the open market since West himself purchased most of them. Maybe those who troll eBay 24/7 might catch a whiff, but I wouldn’t put too much hope on that either unless through a catastrophic string of events, West ends up broke and derelict (touch wood).
The GH-UCM130VU is a multi-angle webcam that shows more than just your face whenever you hold a video chat with one of your friends online. I suppose the only thing that makes this different from other webcams is the ability to twist it on its pivot in various angles, allowing to show off the rest of the room without having to manually lift up the webcam and using your hand to provide a “tour” of the place. Features include a 1.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and the ability to transmit video at 640 x 480 resolution at 30fps. It connects to your computer via USB 2.0 and will come in either black or white colors.
Sony has upgraded its HDR-CX7 flash-based camcorder to include face-recognition technology and Smile Shutter, which automatically takes a still picture as soon as the subject switches to full beam. The camera records in full HD at a resolution of 920 by 1080 pixels, and has a 10-megapixel camera for still shots. There’s image stabilization, and you control the camcorder merely by tapping the 2.7-inch LCD screen. Full press release for the $900 camera.
We have seen touch screens and even touchless touch screens ( in one of my earlier posts ) but Toshiba comes out with its new notebook, the Qosmio G55 which has gesture control capability. The company still maintains it a secret of how it achieves the gesture control. Lets wait and see. And also the company still lauches with the same price of $1,550. Below are some of the specifications of the notebook.
- 18.4″ display at 1,680 x 945 resolution
- Intel Centrino 2 processor
- GeForce 9600M GT video card
- 4GB RAM
- Dual drives
- Quad Core HD processor
Now you Bluetooth headset is not just meant to receive calls but it has got some other features along with it. The new bluetooth headset namely BluePointer is a 3-in-1 headset. It has a laser pointer that can help you for your presentations and a LED flashlight which can come handy at night alongside the headset. The product comes out from Brando and it costs $90
As far as we know silicon wafers are used in gadgets, but now this is the other case were a new chip is created that can filter out the CANCER cells. This device is created by the students of Princeton and Boston University. The device directs and focuses streams of cells in a liquid, like a change sorter, it then separated regular cells from unusual ones. The silicon wafer is tacked with tiny pillars that catch abnormal cells that are, in the end, potentially cancerous.
Don't you have enough place at the office check this out. Mubai-based Planet 3 studios crams a rooms worth of furniture into a single box. It was named " Out-of-Box " workstation and it can incorporate 2 desks, a decent amout of desktop real estate and a ton of storage space into a fairly compact design that can easily be wheeled from one room to another. The design is still at work and it is expected to cost around $ 2350
A video of the workstation in action is also available. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxc5wnBRCm0
Obviously, this type of technology would give the wearer the advantage of knowing exactly when they need to replenish nutrients in order to maintain or increase performance. The project is currently in the testing phase, but if all goes well these garments could make their way into the fat, sweaty hands of regular consumers sometime in the near future.
The Begging Bot from Alexader Gurko is definitely entertaining. Built from a tower PC chassis, this unique bot synches sounds of a floppy as well as hard drive when spinning their respective motors. Once the song is complete, the CD-ROM drive will automatically open up, asking for donations from the public. Pretty interesting and cute - I’m not too sure how many people will actually throw in some pennies when they see this roaming the streets.
The MediDome drug injector is one neat invention from Christopher Holden, a 21 year old student, and the device is currently going to be patented by his school, Northumbria University in Newcastle. The MediDome aims to do away with the needle and syringe in order to eliminate needlestick injuries, coming in a friendlier and less threatening form factor that won’t send kids (and some adults) scurrying away into some corner of the doctor’s office before a jab is administered.
MediDome uses a universal colour coding drug system - the ring is a different colour depending on which drug is in the pre-filled reservoir. Minimal packaging reduces the product’s carbon footprint, and a large label area contains all necessary information, such as drug name and dosage. The peel off adhesive cover also acts as a tamper alarm - it changes colour if the product has been ruptured or tampered with. A companion product, the Absorption MediDome, works in the same way for drugs such as painkillers and certain antibiotics but without the needle.
Most of us already have dealt with some sort of high end handsets one time or another (or is a proud owner of one), and we know that these handsets tend to do a whole lot more than just receive and make phone calls and text messages. With the Mobile Stand from Earth Trek, you’ll be able to access a phone’s functionality a whole lot easier with less hassle. This 4-in-1 mobile stand comes with :-
- USB hub function
- Memory card reader (T-flash, microSD, miniSD, MMC plus, RS-MMC, MMC mobile, MS, MS Pro, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo)
- Mobile charger and mobile stand for universal models
There is no word on pricing, but it will come in black or white colors.
If you happen to spend plenty of time on the road and wish you can listen to your favorite tracks on the iPod via your car’s worst sound system, then this FM transmitter from Green House ought to do the trick. Known as the GH-FTC-35GP, this device plugs into your car’s cigarette lighter outlet and strangely looks like a gear knob, albeit featuring a basic LCD display to denote the current frequency it is tuned in to. We do know that the available transmission frequencies range from 76MHz to 90MHz.
Gone are the times where dogs used to feed off scraps from the table, and they do something useful like hunt down our next meal - these days, pooches are too pampered with pedicures, manicures and steam baths. The Air Conditioned Dog House takes the cake as it offers a cool respite from the scorching summer heat. Yo - haven’t you heard? Energy prices are spiralling upwards everywhere, so better save that juice to air condition your own home so that both of you can enjoy it simultaneously - now how about that?
Homecast has rolled out a brand new GPS navigation system, but unfortunately this looks set to be a Korea-only device. Features of the HM960 include :-
- 4.3″ TFT LCD display in 16:9 format
- T-DMB receiver
- AVI, MPG, ASF, WMV, OGM, DAT, MKV file format support
- DivX 3.11/4/5, XviD, MPEG4, WMV7/8/9, H.264
- MPEG 1/2/2.5 Layer 3, WMA(Ver.9), Ogg Vorbis, AC3 files
While most USB webcams feature a built-in microphone, how many of them actually has a speaker embedded within? This one does, retailing for an impossibly high $31.99. Features include :-
- VGA @ 30 frames/second
- White Balance: Automatic
- Exposure Control: Automatic
- Flash Control: Automatic
The Solar Digital Audio Player, from the front, looks like any other ho hum unit, with a 1.8-inch 220 x 176 resolution display, 4GB of internal storage space and a miniSD expansion slot. Flip ‘er over, and you’ll find a thoughtful kickstand that just so happens to have a solar panel slapped right on, enabling the brilliant, outdoor sunshine to give it a few more minutes of life. There’s no official word on a price or release date,.
